assiment task 29.2-Styles,conventions and techniques of music videos

Task one:

Task two:

A) Briefly define the following conventions of music video in your words and the effect they may
have on the audience.
· Lyric interpretation: the meaning behind the lyrics of a song and the effect on the audience.
· Extending or consolidating song’s meaning: is when you use symbolism to push the meaning of a song or to add more meaning to a song using images and settings. It can also be used to explain the meaning of the lyrics further.
· Focus on performer: when a music video decides to focus on the artist is to either show off their dance moves or singing ability really just to show something off.
· Lighting for mood: the lighting of a music video can say a lot about said music video weather it will be a light, happy, heart felt one or a more darkened one which could be about more sinister things such as violent drugs and more.
· Allusion: it's when something is referenced in a video in a subtle way. It can be when another artist is referenced by just showing an iconic item that relates to that artist. It is used to get people talking about hidden meanings or referencing in videos to create a buzz.
B) Give an example of a music video which shows the following:

· Special effects such as chroma key(green screen): Ace Of Base - Never Going To Say Sorry
· Multi-mage( multiple images on screen at once): Charlie Puth - We Don't Talk Anymore (feat. Selena Gomez).
· Cutting to a beat: The Weekend - Starboy (feat. Daft Punk).
· An artist miming and lip-syncing    to a playback track: Carly Rae Jepsen - Really Like You (feat. Tom Hanks).
· Animation Daft Punk - One More Time.
· Reference to or includes another artist: Ariana Grande - Side To Side (feat. Nicki Minaj).
C) Briefly define the following styles of music video in your own words and give an example of it being applied in an existing music video.

· Illustrative: The visuals are a literal illustration of the lyrics, the story of the song is simply shown in the video: Eminem - Stan (feat. Dido)
· Interpretative: This is where there the link between the video and the lyrics is not immediately obvious. The audience can then speculate on the deeper meaning of the song hence giving more interest: Televators - The Mars Volta.
· Surrealist: When the video is more like a dream, sometimes weird and jumping around when anything is possible. It is used to make the images more memorable to an audience: Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy
· Pastiche /homage: When a video refers to another piece of media in an affectionate way as a tribute:
· As - live: when scenes of a live event like a concert is used in a music video: Pink - Who Knew
· Parody: this is when a music video is copied in order to mock and make fun of it: Blink 182s - All The Small Things parody of boy bands of the time
· Animation: this is when a music video is made on the computer: One More Time - Daft Punk

Assignment Task 29.1 – Purposes of Music Video

What is the purpose of a music video well it is to do several things such as:

·      To promotion of the song
·      To promotion of a new album
·      To show of a new artist or promotion of an artist’s change in musical direction or image
·      To promotion of a film or TV show
·      To increasing the income of the record company
·      To bring awareness to a particular topic

To promotion of the song There are many ways in which a music video can promote the song in it. Ovulary one of the main ways in promotion is to get the video lots of attention is to ether get famous actors of other artists in it, but the method that gets the music video the most attention is to get people talking about it thus creating controversy. One of many videos to do this well is Rihanna’s song “S&M”.

Now this video was deemed controversy because of the videos use of sexually suggestive content and visuals. This video did not do this to just for the attention but also to raze awareness of what she was going through when she was in an abusive relationship with Chris brown. In conclusion this video did its job as it got 80 million view on YouTube allow and the song reached the top 5 hit in the UK.

To promotion of a new album This is a common practise these days with music videos as it is so easy to do. The easiest way to do it is for the album to have the same title as one of the hit song in said album. One song did it very well which was Tupac’s song “me against the world”.

This was his third studio album and released March 1995 the album was released while he was in prison, causing the album to skyrocket at number 1. The music video helps reflect on the message of the song and rest of the album and shared the same name as the song, which helped promote his album. This got a combined total of 40million and got the album to number 1 so you can say the music video did what it was made to do.

To show of a new artist or promotion of an artist’s change in musical direction or image A thing like this has been used many times over the years and has been used most famously by Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. The one we will look at is Justin Bieber music video for “what do you mean”.

Now for his music carrier this was a great move as it was the start of a comeback from him. The tone sound a look of this video is very different to what he use to put out and this was very noticeable and got it lots of attention as is seen as the video got 1.2 billon view which is massive compared to the other videos I have machined. It also shot to number one and gave Justin a good image, which is what it was meant for. And to set a bare for music videos from him as it was colourful fun and feathered a hollowed actor in it.

To promotion of a film or TV show There are many things a music video can promote and one of them is a films and TV shows. One of the did this the best is “heathens”.

This song was promoting the film suicide squad which made £800 million pounds worldwide and was one of the fasts grossing films in the summer making £135.1 million in the first week of its realise. It was promoting the film by showing a mix of sense from the film and things they had filmed there self’s and it also got into the 4 in the UK chart and got 278 million views on YouTube.

To increasing the income of the record company This is one of the many reason of music because if it got them no money they would not be made and one of the ones that did it better the other is "sucker for pain".

The same company that made the film suicide squad and was made for them to save and make them money made this video. They saved money as it would have cost them more to buy the rights of another song that wasn’t there’s and to make them money as they got four well known artists to be in the song to get a bigger target market. It also shot up to number 8 on the UK charts and got 157 million views on YouTube.

To bring awareness to a particular topic this can be done in many ways but the way that is most common is to create controversy and just that was done in lady gaga’s “till it happens to you”.

In this video it is bring attention to rape on college campuses. It did this by showing unsettling visuals and a dark tonne as the whole video is shot in black and white to give that affect. It did what it was intended to do as it got 36 million views on YouTube and got a lot of attention from the press and media.

Lesson 3: Music Video Production And Controversy

Notes:
  • revenue generation- the main point of a music video is to generation revenue (money)
  • where they will be purchased
  • promoting artists and album
  • does it get attention - controversy

What is controversy it is when people conflict between different people in society?
  • Profits
  • Record company
  • Also to bring awareness to a certain subject

Rihanna - S&M: the music video to this hit single by well-known singer Rihanna. This music video was very controversial for all of the suggested imagery and sexual trying. Nut this was not just to get her attention as she was already well known by many people.
this video was made to show what it was like for her in her relationship with cerise brown. which was at the time was revelled to be a abusive relationship which she couldn't get away from. with multiple people tied up and with mouth peace's and a lot of sexually suggestive content in it which is y it was banned because it is a very sketchy topic and the way is was presented was also controversy.

Homework for week 1: Camra angles

Camera angles: music video - Disturbaia
To understand the reasoning behind the camera angles and the way the music video is shot u must first know what the word Disturbaia means. The word is a mash between suburbs and disturb, thus "Disturbaia" is created. It's not an actual word it's just slang, but the word was derived from the movie Disturbaia. The word is used to describe the dark side of a neighbourhood/suburb (the creepy side).

So this music video uses a lot of different forms of shots and angles to give of the effect of insane.
· A lot of the shots are speed up to give of the unnatural fell of the shot.
· Also a lot of tracking shots are used to let the viewer see what is around the artist as they are moving.
· Lots of over lapping shots are shown to let the viewer see her going insane.

Over all the camera work is pretty good but what really made this music video is the editing but in all the camera work did a great job on showing the viewer what Disturbaia is (it’s important because it is what the song is about).
