Task one:
Task two:
A)
Briefly define the following conventions of music video in your words and the
effect they may
have on
the audience.
· Lyric interpretation: the meaning
behind the lyrics of a song and the effect on the audience.
· Extending or consolidating song’s
meaning: is when you use symbolism to push the meaning of a song or
to add more meaning to a song using images and settings. It can also be
used to explain the meaning of the lyrics further.
· Focus on performer: when a music
video decides to focus on the artist is to either show off their dance moves or
singing ability really just to show something off.
· Lighting for mood: the lighting
of a music video can say a lot about said music video weather it will be a light,
happy, heart felt one or a more darkened one which could be about more
sinister things such as violent drugs and more.
· Allusion: it's
when something is referenced in a video in a subtle way. It can be when
another artist is referenced by just showing an iconic item that relates to
that artist. It is used to get people talking about hidden meanings or
referencing in videos to create a buzz.
B) Give
an example of a music video which shows the following:
· Special effects such as chroma
key(green screen): Ace Of Base - Never Going To Say Sorry
· Multi-mage( multiple images on
screen at once): Charlie Puth - We Don't Talk Anymore (feat. Selena Gomez).
· Cutting to a beat: The Weekend -
Starboy (feat. Daft Punk).
· An artist miming and lip-syncing
to a playback track: Carly Rae Jepsen - Really Like You (feat. Tom
Hanks).
· Animation Daft Punk - One More
Time.
· Reference to or includes another
artist: Ariana Grande - Side To Side (feat. Nicki Minaj).
C)
Briefly define the following styles of music video in your own words and give
an example of it being applied in an existing music video.
· Illustrative: The visuals are a
literal illustration of the lyrics, the story of the song is simply shown
in the video: Eminem - Stan (feat. Dido)
· Interpretative: This is where
there the link between the video and the lyrics is not immediately
obvious. The audience can then speculate on the deeper meaning of the song
hence giving more interest: Televators - The Mars Volta.
· Surrealist: When the video is
more like a dream, sometimes weird and jumping around when anything is
possible. It is used to make the images more memorable to an audience: Aphex
Twin - Come To Daddy
· Pastiche /homage: When a video
refers to another piece of media in an affectionate way as a tribute:
· As - live: when scenes of a live
event like a concert is used in a music video: Pink - Who Knew
· Parody: this is when a music
video is copied in order to mock and make fun of it: Blink 182s - All The
Small Things parody of boy bands of the time
· Animation: this is when a music
video is made on the computer: One More Time - Daft Punk
